2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Shift Follows Poor Response

Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the necessity for a more defined game identity.

The president noted that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

The news echoes a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the full message from the president's communication:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to persist.”

With your dedication and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had work to do. It uncovered the requirement for a clearer brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our fans.

The trust in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. Following a period of talks, he officially joins us on the specified date.

Ben’s leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having spent the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in greeting him in the coming days. We are all excited to persist seeing the progress of the game in the months to come.

David

Experience of the Incoming Leader

The appointee presently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.

Title Details and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 together with a community playtest. At the time, the developers portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Take on the competition with fresh skills, risks, and obstacles that evolve every round. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and trust your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is in your hands."

The game lacks an official debut schedule or consoles, but players can look forward to additional details as production continues.
