Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
