Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
