Social Media Influencers Fueling Parallel Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Experimental Drug Gaining Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Express Worries

However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Some experts stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still breach medicines, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Content Removal

According to the social media company, the service has removed violative content and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Online Marketplace Operations

Research also found communities with up to nine thousand members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with numerous of users, populated with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or administering at home.

After moments of entering one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Pricing

Inside these communities, messages display dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Actions

A representative for the messaging service said it actively monitored dangerous material on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“Individuals are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to recent cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to social media. But fake injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has already encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly serious health risks”.
